Sirens awake Giovana and Yago, who only met the night before, instructing them to close all windows and doors immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stock post-apocalypse thriller would have charted their physical battle to survive confinement, then solve the mystery of the cloud. In her feature debut, written in 2017 and shot in 2019, but made in a remarkable act of prescience, writer-director Gerbase takes \u201cThe Pink Cloud\u201d in another, character-driven, direction. The film\u2019s chore is its charting of the distinct emotional reactions of Giovana (Renata de Lelis, \u201cAvental Rosa\u201d) and Yago (Eduardo Mendon\u00e7a, \u201cNecropolis\u201d) as days of lockdown become years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen COVID-19 began, I thought people would only see \u2018The Pink Cloud\u2019 as reflecting coronavirus, when right from the beginning, it was conceived as a feminist film,\u201d Gerbase told&nbsp;<em>Variety<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pranafilmes.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/ThePinkCloud_Still_2.jpg\" alt=\"Lazy loaded image\"\/><figcaption>The Pink CloudCREDIT: MPM PREMIUM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She added: \u201cGiovana makes it clear she doesn\u2019t want a longterm relationship with Yago, and tells him, \u2018No, I don\u2019t want kids.\u2019 The film is about what society expects from women. Giovana\u2019s freedom is gone and her wishes, what she wanted from life, doesn\u2019t matter any more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Giovana\u2019s sense of discomfort grows, and her sense of rebellion, transcends her relationship with Yago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Pink Cloud\u201d weighs into Sundance as a banner title from a young generation of women directors in Brazil that already swept Ventana Sur, where both Flavia Neves\u2019 \u201cFogar\u00e9u,\u201d a searing magic realist putdown of provincial Brazil, and Thais Fujinaga\u2019s \u201cThe Joy of Things,\u201d a probing portrait of pressured motherhood, played the market\u2019s main Primer Corte competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of my favorite Brazilian directors are women,\u201d said Gerbase, adding that Fujinaga is a friend and citing as examples of strong Brazilian women directors&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/film\/reviews\/good-manners-review-1202526631\/\">Juliana Rojas<\/a>&nbsp;(\u201cHard Labor, \u201cGood Manners\u201d),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2016\/film\/reviews\/kill-me-please-review-1201733435\/\">Anita Rocha da Silveira<\/a>&nbsp;(\u201cKill Me Please\u201d) and Academy Award-nominated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/film\/reviews\/the-edge-of-democracy-review-2-1203197072\/\">Petra Costa<\/a>&nbsp;(\u201cThe Edge of Democracy\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Near all have experimented with genre. \u201cGenerations ago, genre was more niche, but no longer but films like \u2018Good Manners\u2019 are really focused on characters, just as \u2018The Pink Cloud\u2019 is intimate sci-fi, like the new feature I\u2019m writing,\u201d Gerbase said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not made as a reaction to COVID-19, \u201cThe Pink Cloud\u201d could help people process emotions which the global lockdown has sparked, by turning, for instance, on different views of happiness and freedom, Gerbase argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though feminist-themed, \u201cThe Pink Cloud\u201d does not judge nor condemn Yago\u2019s pragmatic adaptability. In lockdown, \u201cmany people are trying to be productive, saying \u2018Let\u2019s cook a lot\u2019 or \u2018Let\u2019s learn, make a lot of online classes,\u2019\u201d Gerbase observed. \u201cI\u2019m like, if you\u2019re not productive, don\u2019t worry.
